Most water damage to Ethernet cable is not dramatic. It is a duct that holds an inch of water at its lowest point, a conduit that breathes and condenses through every night-and-day cycle, or an unsealed termination on the underside of a camera housing. The cable is not submerged; it is simply never quite dry. Performance drifts, the shield corrodes, and eighteen months later a link that tested clean at handover is failing intermittently in the rain.
Wider Cable has manufactured Ethernet cable since 2005 with raw-material-to-finished control across facilities in Dongguan, China and Hưng Yên, Vietnam. That means the jacket compound, the shield construction and the termination are specified together, against the way water actually reaches the cable on your site.
How water gets in, and what it costs
- Through a compromised jacket. Ultraviolet cracking, abrasion at a fixing, or a nick during a pull. The jacket is the primary barrier; everything downstream assumes it is intact.
- Along the core by capillary action. Water entering at one damaged point travels — sometimes many metres — inside the cable, so the fault appears nowhere near the breach.
- Through the termination. The most common real-world entry point. A perfect cable with an unsealed plug in an outdoor enclosure is an open pipe.
- By condensation. Warm humid air enters a conduit, cools overnight, and deposits water inside a run that was never exposed to rain at all.
The electrical consequence is consistent: water raises the dielectric constant between conductors, which shifts impedance, degrades return loss and increases insertion loss. On shielded constructions it also corrodes the foil and drain, quietly removing the bonding path the shield existed to provide.
Where buyers specify it
- Underground ducts and draw pits that hold water for months at a time.
- External camera and access-control positions, where the enclosure is the real risk rather than the cable.
- Car parks, loading yards and dock areas with wash-down, spray and standing water.
- Agricultural and food-production buildings, where humidity and cleaning regimes are constant.
- Coastal and marine sites, combining moisture with salt.

If your installation needs a water-blocked core rather than jacket protection alone — a permanently wet duct, or a run where a single breach must not travel — say so with the enquiry. That is a construction decision we take at quotation, not a stock item we pull off a shelf.
Getting the installation right
The cable is half the answer. On wet sites the other half is method, and it is worth writing into the specification:
- Form a drip loop before every enclosure entry, so gravity works for you at the one point that matters most.
- Seal the termination to the enclosure's rating, and treat that seal as part of the cable system rather than an accessory.
- Avoid low points that cannot drain; where a duct must dip, plan the drainage rather than the cable.
- Bond and earth shielded runs properly at the designed end. A shield that is wet and floating is worse than no shield at all.
Certification and testing
Cable is Fluke-tested before it ships, and we hold UL, c(UL), ETL, CPR, RoHS, REACH, CE, SGS, ISO and TÜV across the range. Tell us at quotation which certificate the project needs and it is prepared with the shipment rather than chased afterwards.

Common questions
Is outdoor cable the same as waterproof cable?
No. An outdoor jacket is built to survive exposure — sun, cold, rain, weather. Sustained immersion or a permanently flooded duct is a different specification, and it needs to be stated rather than assumed.
Can you supply a water-blocked construction?
Tell us the conditions with your enquiry and we will confirm what we can build against them. We would rather quote a construction we can stand behind than list a capability in the abstract.
Does water affect PoE runs differently?
It compounds them. Moisture raises insertion loss while PoE current raises conductor temperature, and the two together erode margin on long runs faster than either alone. Send us the run length and power budget together.
