Cat6 Patch Cords, Built by the Reel Not the Box

Cat6 patch cable still carries most of the world's office ports: 250 MHz, gigabit everywhere, 10 Gigabit on short runs. Round AWG26 and flat AWG32 constructions, made from raw copper through to the Fluke-tested cord.

  • Bandwidth
    250 MHz

    TIA/EIA-568 Category 6.

  • Constructions
    AWG26 round · AWG32 flat

    Both built in-house, U/UTP.

Category 6 is the volume line, and it stays the volume line because it sits exactly where most networks actually operate. It is specified to 250 MHz, carries gigabit to a full 100 m without argument, and supports 10GBASE-T on shorter runs — roughly 55 m, and subject to the alien crosstalk environment around it. For an office floor of desks, phones, printers and access points, that is the whole requirement.

Wider Cable has manufactured Ethernet cable since 2005, from bare copper through to the finished, tested cord, across our Dongguan headquarters in China and our facility in Hưng Yên, Vietnam. Cat6 is where that vertical control shows up most obviously, because it is the category people buy on price and then discover the difference on site.

The flat construction is not a gimmick. Under carpet tiles, along a skirting run, inside a shallow trunking or around the tight radius behind a wall-mounted screen, a flat AWG32 cord routes where a round AWG26 will not sit without stressing the jacket. It is a routing product, chosen for where it goes rather than for what it costs.

Where Cat6 is still the right call

  • Commercial office floors — desk drops, phones, printers, meeting-room ports.
  • Education and healthcare estates with very high port counts and gigabit endpoints.
  • Hospitality and retail fit-outs, where per-port cost multiplies fast across hundreds of rooms.
  • Patch fields in racks built to Cat6, where matching the installed plant matters more than exceeding it.
  • Access points and cameras on standard deployments that will not exceed a gigabit.

Where it is not the right call: dense 10 Gigabit bundles, or a horizontal plant you expect to keep for fifteen years. That is what Cat6A is for, and we will say so rather than sell you the cheaper reel.

What separates a good Cat6 cord from a cheap one

Everything that goes wrong with commodity patch cords goes wrong in the same three places:

  • The conductor. Copper-clad aluminium passes a quick bench check and then fails on DC resistance over a real run — worse still once PoE current is flowing. We build with bare copper.
  • The twist. Crosstalk performance depends on twist consistency the whole length of the reel, not just where the sample was taken. Process control is the only thing that delivers it.
  • The termination. Contact plating, how far the pairs are untwisted inside the plug, and strain relief at the boot cause more channel failures than the cable between them. Ours are gold-plated and Fluke-tested.

Certification and testing

Every cord is Fluke-tested before it ships, and the results go with the order. Across the range we hold UL, c(UL), ETL, CPR, RoHS, REACH, CE, SGS, ISO and TÜV, attached to the constructions that genuinely carry them.

Ordering

We build OEM/ODM: your length schedule, colour scheme, boot style, jacket rating, labelling, packaging and branding. Send quantities per length and colour and we quote from the factory. For anything outside the standard range, see the custom cable service.

Common questions

Does Cat6 support 10 Gigabit?

On shorter runs — around 55 m — and depending on the alien crosstalk environment. For 10GBASE-T to a full 100 m in a real bundle, specify Cat6A.

Is flat Cat6 electrically equivalent to round?

Both are specified to 250 MHz, but the flat construction uses a finer AWG32 conductor. Choose flat for where it has to route; choose round for general patching and longer cords.

Do you supply pure copper conductors?

Yes — bare copper, not copper-clad aluminium. If a competing quote looks impossibly cheap, ask for DC loop resistance.

Can you print or label cords to our scheme?

Yes. Custom printing, labelling, colour coding and packaging are standard parts of an OEM order.
