Cat8 Patch Cords for the Top of the Rack

Cat8 patch cable exists for one job: 25 and 40 Gigabit over copper across a 30 m channel, inside a data centre. At 2000 MHz the cord is no longer an accessory — shield continuity and termination quality decide whether the link comes up at all.

Category 8 is the most misunderstood cable on a price list. It is not "Cat6A but better" — it is a short-reach data-centre specification. ANSI/TIA-568.2-D defines Cat8 to 2000 MHz and supports 25GBASE-T and 40GBASE-T across a channel of roughly 30 m with up to two connectors. Beyond that distance the standard does not apply, and a 50 m "Cat8" cord is marketing rather than engineering.

Used where it belongs — switch to server, top-of-rack and end-of-row — it does something no other copper category does: 40 Gigabit on familiar RJ45 hardware, with no transceiver cost and no fibre termination skills required on the floor.

Why the cord matters more at 2000 MHz

Every impairment scales with frequency. At 100 MHz a mediocre termination costs you margin you will never notice. At 2000 MHz it costs you the link.

  • Shield continuity is the product. Category 8 is a fully shielded specification. Braid and foil must be bonded continuously through the plug, not merely present in the cable. A shield that stops at the boot is decoration.
  • The plug is a transmission-line component. The transition from twisted pair into contacts is where return loss is won or lost. Contact plating, pair separation and untwist length inside the plug all show up in the sweep.
  • Length discipline is real. The 30 m budget is a channel, not a cord. Patch cords at both ends consume part of it, so the fixed link has less to work with than people assume.
  • Bonding is a design decision. A shielded channel needs a defined earthing scheme. Shields bonded at both ends into different ground potentials cause more problems than they solve.

Every cord is Fluke-tested before it ships. Across the range we hold UL, c(UL), ETL, CPR, RoHS, REACH, CE, SGS, ISO and TÜV. For data-centre projects in the EU, confirm the reaction-to-fire class your specification requires at quotation.

Common questions

Can I run Cat8 over 50 m?

Not to the standard. Category 8 is specified to roughly 30 m of channel for 25G and 40G. Longer copper runs need a different category, or fibre.

Do I need Cat8 for a 10 Gigabit network?

Almost never. 10GBASE-T runs to a full 100 m on Cat6A, which is cheaper, easier to install and available unshielded. Cat8 earns its cost at 25G and 40G.

Does Cat8 have to be shielded?

Yes. Category 8 is a fully shielded specification — there is no unshielded Cat8. Plan the bonding and earthing scheme with it.

Can you supply short cords in bulk with our labelling?

Yes. Custom lengths, colour coding, printing and retail or bulk packaging are all part of a standard OEM order.
