Cat5e: Still the Volume Line

Cat5e cable has not been the newest category for twenty years, and it is still one of the most shipped. Gigabit to 100 m, PoE for cameras and access points, and a cost per port nothing above it matches — when the application genuinely does not need more.

There is a habit in this industry of treating Cat5e as obsolete. The shipping volumes say otherwise. Category 5e is specified to 100 MHz and carries 1000BASE-T to a full 100 m channel, which is exactly what an IP camera, a door controller, a wireless access point on a standard deployment, a till, a printer or a desk phone actually needs. Specifying Cat6A to a fixed camera that will never exceed 1 Gbps is not future-proofing — it is spending budget where it buys nothing.

Those are the properties of the category, defined by the standard. What differs between suppliers is whether the cable you receive actually meets them across the whole reel — which is a manufacturing question, not a specification one.

Where it is still the right specification

  • Camera and access-control drops. Fixed-function endpoints with a known, permanent bandwidth ceiling.
  • Retail, hospitality and light commercial fit-outs where port count is high and per-port cost decides the project.
  • Refurbishment and extension work that has to match an existing Cat5e infrastructure rather than create a mixed plant.
  • Voice, signage, till systems and building controls — high volume, low bandwidth, long service life.
  • Patch panel to device cords in racks that were built to Cat5e and will stay that way.

Where it is the wrong specification is equally clear: anything expecting 10GBASE-T, dense high-power PoE bundles, or a structured-cabling backbone with a fifteen-year horizon. For those, Cat6A is the honest starting point.

The part that separates suppliers

Category 5e is a commodity in name only. The failure modes we see in cable that arrives on site are consistently the same three, and all of them are manufacturing decisions:

  • Copper-clad aluminium sold as copper. It measures acceptable on a short bench test, then fails on DC resistance over a real run — and fails badly once PoE current is added.
  • Inconsistent twist rate. Crosstalk performance holds at the start of a reel and drifts by the end, so the first drops certify and the last ones do not.
  • Terminations that pass visually and fail electrically. Contact plating, strain relief and the transition into the plug do more damage to a channel than the cable in the middle of it.

We control the process from raw material inward, and every finished cable is Fluke-tested before it leaves. That is the point of buying from the manufacturer rather than from a trader.

How we build it

Bare copper conductors, unshielded or shielded to your requirement, LSZH or PVC jackets, gold-plated RJ45 terminations, assembled lengths from 0.2 m to 25 m, around nine colours for identification, and bulk cable to your reel length. Send the construction you need — including gauge, jacket rating, boot style, colour, packaging and any private-label requirement — and we quote against it.

Certification and testing

Fluke test results ship with the order. Across the range we hold UL, c(UL), ETL, CPR, RoHS, REACH, CE, SGS, ISO and TÜV, attached to the constructions that genuinely carry them. Tell us which certificates the project requires at quotation stage.

Common questions

Is Cat5e still worth specifying for new work?

For fixed-function, gigabit-ceiling endpoints, yes. For a structured backbone you expect to keep for fifteen years, no. The category is not the decision — the application and its horizon are.

Does Cat5e support PoE?

Yes. PoE and PoE+ are supported. On long runs and dense bundles, conductor gauge matters more than category for voltage drop and heat — send us the run length and bundle size and we will specify accordingly.

Do you supply pure copper, not copper-clad aluminium?

We build with bare copper conductors. If you have been quoted suspiciously cheap Cat5e elsewhere, DC loop resistance is the measurement that settles it — ask for it.

Can you supply Cat5e in bulk as well as patch cords?

Yes, both. Assembled cords from 0.2 m to 25 m, and bulk cable to your reel length.
